It is this expansion and contraction that draws air and fuel into the engine, compresses it and makes useful power as the gases expand, and then expels the exhaust. When extra horsepower is required, a flange or block plate in the cutout can be moved into place manually or electronically to allow the exhaust gases to escape the labyrinth of exhaust system quickly. The intake valve is held open a little too long, so that when the piston moves up for the compression stroke, a little of the gas-air mixture can escape. When the spark hits, the mixture ignites and moves the pistons. Then the spark plug does its thing and the piston takes advantage of the combustion with a full power stroke down the cylinder.
